PSA - CFL Recycling

One of the many benefits of compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs) is that they last up to 10 times longer than incandescent bulbs. But how should we dispose of these bulbs when they do burn out?

The answer: Recycle!

Home Depot recently announced an in-store, consumer CFL recycling program at all store locations in the United States.

According to Home Depot, customers can simply bring in any expired, unbroken CFL bulbs, place them in a plastic bag and deposit into the orange CFL collection unit. The bulbs will then be managed by an environmental management company who will coordinate packaging, transportation and recycling. The CFL receptacles are located on the front end of the store near the entrance, by the returns desk or near the exit doors inside the store.

A store finder is available on the Home Depot website to locate the store nearest you. Many towns and cities offer recycling opportunities at local recycling centers or transfer stations. There may also be household hazardous waste collection days; contact your local waste disposal officials for details.

  1. Odd that you mention this, because I was just thinking this weekend about how we need to figure out how to dispose of our CFC bulbs. Thanks Home Depot!

  3. Just don't drop one in your home they have mercury in them. I'm sticking with the old kind for now.

  5. Thank you so much for this info. We have just started using some of this type and it has kind of worried me as to what to do with them when one does burn out.

  6. I'll remember that when one finally goes. This is only the first year for most of them in my house. I just wonder if they really will last 5 - 7 years???

  8. I am a huge recycler Ken, I had a nice system before the fire! I don't have the room here to do as many bins as I did there, but I still do as much as I can.It is so important....so, so, important! Thanks for the tip about Home Depot.

  9. Thanks for the info, and I didn't know that Home Depot did that!
A job I used to have, we used these bulbs, and some were still good over 4 years later. It was a bright idea to switch over, and to the comment about mercury. Many things contain Mercury, just be careful!

    Have a good day'

  11. Thanks for the Home Depot tip. I have had two bulbs that died. They both were three way. I wrote to Sylvania and they sent me a new bulb and then another one quit working. I still have it wrapped up nicely, now I know where to take it. I had a bit of savings on the electric bill, but the bulbs are so expensive, and at some near point in time that is all we will be able to get.

  12. Ken, I own three Verilux Full Spectrum Bulbs which I use, one at a time, please, for painting because they show a truer color. They are made with "neodymium" glass. I have no idea what that is but my painter friends all use them. They last a good long time, but I wish they were recyclable. DB
