One Leg At A Time :o)

Vent Time: My primary responsibility is long range planning, looking forward. Unfortunately, as a society, as a nation, as an economy, we are focused on the now - the next quarter results - etc..... [you get the idea]. So today, my financial meeting was cancelled, by one of our Senior Leaders. This is the #5 cancel in the last 3 months. They do not hold financial and long range planning as a core value. Their position in the organization allows them to make decisions such as this. Thing is, I know that I put my pants on the same way they, One Leg At A Time. Position often allows others to to change things up on their whim or agenda. That Just Sucks. End Of Rant.

One of the things we try and focus on for coaching and leadership development, is to make sure you are performing your "role". Supervisors need to supervise, Managers need to Manage, Directors need to direct, and Vice Presidents need to VP (meaning, focus on strategy and look ahead).

Unfortunately, especially in times of difficulty or stress, we have a tendency to revert to our previous mode of operation (our comfort zone). At our facility, we have VPs acting as Directors, Directors acting as Mangers, and based on their "position power", this usurps all else that is going on. The more you have Directors acting as managers, that forces Managers to revert to supervisory roles, and Supervisors reverting to individual contributor roles. This cycle works good for immediate issues and events, but ABSOLUTELY does not work for look aheads, long range planning, and strategic thinking.

So, my wish for you is to recognize your role, whether it is at home or at work. Make sure you put on the proper uniform to allow you to fulfill your role - Parent, Sibling, Relative, Friend, Coworker, Supervisor, Manager [you get the picture]. It can be hard at times to stay in your designated role, but I believe you will come out a better person in the long run :o)

  1. What do you mean? I'm the oldest member of this extended family so I'm the boss... Right? Just kidding. Sometimes it is hard to stay in my own lane (especially where my kids are concerned) but I do try. I'm not that long out of the work force that I don't understand your frustration as well.

  5. Interesting rant- isn't it funny with the financial situation as it is that "the place of which we do not speak" cancelled meetings concerning , well, the bottom line as well as future projections?
As far as "role"- many of us have worn or wear many hats. Sometimes the gardener is also the bread winner. You must perform your offical top role but sometimes fill-in or take up the slack also! Hang in there, Bucko, around here you hold a power position! Dannelle

  6. Look at our society, parents want to be "friends" with their kids instead of parenting. They allow them to drink at home because "at least they're under supervision", smoke at a young age, won't say NO when they should. There is a high school up our street, well to do (or better off) kids attend. They are suffering a heroin epidemic! HEROIN!!! Where to they get the money?? -- which brings us to modern times!

  7. What a shame that some don't consider long range planning to be as important as you and your team do. I suppose it's as you said, wanting to stick close to the comfort zone, when you really need to be planning for the future.

  8. Panic is what fills the gaps between expectations and where one is, when there is no vision. Being able to think beyond the present moment is the REASON you plan and do outlooks ... but I recall on one of those motivational posters, talking about leadership and sometimes sailing with and against the wind...

... which is what planning and looking to the future is about. Who plans to fail? No one, but not many plan at all.
