Management, What does it really mean?

As you step into management, you are stepping out of a world where someone else solved your problems and into a world where you are the primary problem solver. You will spend a good deal of time putting out fires, addressing people problems and resolving conflicts. You will become the go-to person when your employees encounter challenges—or simply need to vent their discontent.   Are you up to the task, or will you manage by proxy?  It can be lonely, but rewarding as well.

  1. I was once one and decided that it was time for a career change. I hated the experience, the compensation did not merit the headaches. However, I like the classroom.

  2. Definitely problem solving, information providers, keepers of everything, counselor by default, listener, planner, complaint taker. My office is never lonely in HR, but yeah as far as like being friends - there are a few who are afraid of me b/c of my position and I don't like that but it is the way it is. You know once you get a management job - those under you are already talking about you on DAY 1. But it can be rewarding at times when those few that you MENTOR or help that GET YOU and those above you that APPRECIATE you. On those days it is highly rewarding. We live in a negative world and any positiveness from either side is rewarding. Of course I have plenty to say on this subject but it's your blog - not mine. lol Hope you and Beth have a great weekend.

  3. I've been on both sides of the track. It can be rewarding in many ways and yet quite stressful on other days. The paycheck should compensate for it!

    You just have to love what you do for a living otherwise you will be miserable.

    I think that this is the kind of advice that should be shared with high schoolers as they get ready for college... they will be making a transition that is similar to that of moving from having to 'do' and having an agent in some sort of authority over them to being the one who solves problems and deal with others on the 'management-owner' level.
