Project Success Principles
Five Immutable Principles of Project Success
Do we know what the project is supposed to produce, the recognizable deliverables, the measures of success for those deliverables, and most importantly, the units of measure of the success that are agreed to by the decision makers?
Do we have a plan and a schedule to execute that plan? The plan tells us what we are supposed to be doing? The schedule tells us when we should be doing this work. Both a Plan and a Schedule are needed.
Do we have enough resource to complete the project on time, on budget, and on specification? This means there must be a resource utilization plan. A resource loaded schedule is the best starting point.
Do we know the risks in the project and their Risk Handling responses? If not, the risks are still there and will turn into Issues and then you'll be late and over budget, and the outcome will probably not work.
Do we know that we are actually making progress? In traditional projects Earned Value is a good way to measure progress.

Electromagnetic Rail Gun
A railgun fires projectiles using electricity instead of chemical propellants. Magnetic fields created by strong electrical currents accelerate a sliding metal conductor between two rails to launch projectiles at about 7,200 to 9,000 kilometers per hour, compared to perhaps 5,400 kilometers per hour for a conventional gun. By equipping ships with railguns rather than standard artillery, the Navy could eliminate the hazards of having high explosives on board ships.

As the Wipe Turns...
Maybe you’ve heard that we’re now using more trees for toilet paper than for newsprint. (Not least because the newspaper industry is even more in the toilet than toilet paper.) But did you know that because of Americans’ demand for super-soft TP for our bungholes, 98 percent of the pulp used to make the stuff comes from virgin wood?
More toilet paper used to be made out of recycled office paper, but now that offices are going paperless, there’s less of the really high quality recyclable paper — the kind with the long fibers — to go around.

The average American uses 23.6 rolls of toilet paper a year — that’s about 7 billion rolls for the country. If a single eucalyptus tree yields 1,000 rolls, we’re wiping our asses with 7 million eucalyptus trees.
I do not think we will ever go the way of the French, but at least we could be less soft...

Are You Bitter?
Brussels sprouts are bitter, and kids generally don’t like bitter tastes. Adults do not have the same reaction. What gives?
Researchers say that an aversion to bitter and sour (generally a heightened gag reflex) is a survival instinct, since most toxins taste that way too. On the other hand, sweetness typically indicates that something is safe to eat, so children are born with a preference for sweets.
My taste buds say no to green peppers, yams, cottage cheese, eggplant, and squash. What about yours?
