Kicking It Trip [KIT™] Day 1

It was a sweet start to our Kicking It Trip [KIT™].  Our rental is a Chrysler 300, Year 2012 with 6815 miles. It has Satellite radio, a backup camera, and other bells and whistles.  It is a sweet ride.

We headed out at about 1030, and headed to Chicago for the start of the trip, it was a gorgeous day and it was fun to drive down Lake Shore Drive.

We then wound our way through the city and eventually ended up at Dell Rhea's Chicken Basket in Willowbrook for lunch.  The Chicken Basket started as a gas station, then a Blue Bird Bus Stop, and had ice skaters on the roof to attract travelers. In 1963, the Rhea's purchased it and it has been a must stop on the Route since.

Then it was off to Willmington IL where I encountered my first Giant, the Gemini.

Next we headed to Dwight to see the Ambler Texaco, build in 1932.

Our next stop was in Odell with the Standard Oil Station also built in 1932 with the service bays added in 1937.

By this time, it was time for a bio-break and an amber beverage, which we were able to satisfy at the Old Log Cabin in Pontiac Illinios, build in 1926 and redone recently.

I think my favorite thing today was the searcing for the original road, and how things have changed and grown, but remnants of the original mother road still exist. We saw and will see many more of this.
